All for “Progress”

Don’t speak your mind

Just step in line

Or the thought police will come

They’re hard to spot

They’re quite a lot

Sleeper agents trained in public school

Your life, job, and family are what they seek to wreck

They don’t realize that it’s they themselves the Masters will forget

All for Progress

Another day

Another dollar

Another day

Time passes

Slips away

Hope held out

For quite some time

Till I woke this morning

Unable to find

Reason to hold on

To something long gone

The memories are nice

But it’s time to move along

Can the mistakes of the past

Ever be fixed

Can we overcome ourselves

To find that something we missed

This body’s wrecked

The joints ache

The muscles burn

The mind teeters

On the head of a pin

It wobbles but stands

But for how long

A pleasant view

I wonder when the world ends

If I’ll be there to see

The mountains crumble into dust

The sky bursting at the seams

I have a place all prepped to go

With a pleasant view

A cigar, fine wine, and place to dine

In case my dream comes true

True Love

True love comes round

But once in this life

If you choose not to cherish it

You’ll find eternal strife

I know this is fact

As it happened to me

This fool didn’t realize

How good it could be

He tossed it aside

Again and again

Until it wouldn’t come back

True sorrow came then

For which there’s no cure

Though time numbs the pain

But it shows it was pure

The love was I mean

I’ll cherish those memories

Keep them locked up inside

I’ll never release them

Even after I die

Time heals all things

Time heals all things

Hear it a lot

A lie to be sure

As it surely does not

The hole never fills

Hurt rarely subsides

A void in the heart

Where numbness resides

Light of a new day

Stars in the sky

Planes overhead

Cars passing by

Good times and bad times

And those in between

So much existence

Is still left unseen

Space is taking too long.

Where are the imagined vessels and technologies Asimov, Heinlein, and Clarke promised? The exhilarating lands beyond the stars with their tantalizing secrets woven like tapestries across the pages. The Hero’s and Heroine’s pushed to the extreme both physically and mentally, forced to perform under the most extreme of pressures. Some ended in failure and despair, but those that managed to succeed proved time and again that we, the human race, are capable of anything.

Instead, we seem to be drudging along in the stone age of fossil fuels. Our space programs gone now, we have to hitch a ride with Russia to get out of orbit. I realize it may not have been the biggest money maker but the non-monetary benefits were, and could be, even more impressive.

We as a species have conquered this planet. We bend or break everything to our will, from the tiniest cricket to the tallest mountain, for better or for worse. If we can accomplish what we have just over the past 2000 years, there’s no reason that we can’t use that strength to spread our grasp throughout the stars!
